The 27-year-old France international has been in custody for more than four months since he was first arrested and charged on August 26 last year and was released on bail at Chester Crown Court on Friday.

Mendy, who faces seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, was being held at HMP Manchester after being transferred to HMP Altcourse in Liverpool. Judge Patrick Thompson granted him bail in a private hearing where the media was not included during the bail hearing.
Mendy was due to appear in court this month, but that has been postponed until early June.
Thompson granted Mendy bail until January 24, the date of his next court appearance. Bail conditions were not given in open court, but Mendy was told to remain at his home address, not to contact prosecutors and to hand in his passport by midnight on Friday.
Mendy, from Prestbury, Cheshire, is charged with eight counts against five different women, including seven counts of rape in relation to four women and one count of sexual assault. The charges are three counts of rape that allegedly occurred on October 11, 2020; have sex on January 2, 2021; Two rapes on July 24, 2021; and two counts of rape on August 23, 2021.

He is sitting in the dock alongside his co-defendant Louis Sah Matturie, 40, of Eccles, Greater Manchester, who is charged with six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
Ian Unsworth QC, prosecuting, told the court that on Thursday Maturie was committed to one count of rape and one count of sexual assault and will appear in court next week on further charges. A decision on Matturie's bail application is yet to come.
Mendy joined Monaco City in 2017 for £52m, then a record fee for a defender, and made 75 appearances. The team suspended him after the accusation.
The postponement of the case could have been one of the main reasons behind the decision to grant bail, experts said.

"The fact that the case is delayed can be a decisive factor. A delayed trial means more time in custody and means accused people can be sent back through no fault of their own and need bail in the meantime,” said Jon Wilkins, partner at Reeds Solicitors.
Although the terms of the bond were not released, Wilkins said it was likely that bail — an amount of money paid to ensure a court appearance — was required and that Mendy may have an electronic curfew tag. Another man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the alleged rape and sexual assault of Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy, Cheshire Constabulary said.
The organization said on Saturday that a 40-year-old man accused of rape earlier this week had been arrested and released on bail.

Mendy, 27, appeared at Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The three rape allegations occurred in October 2020, with the woman being sexually assaulted in early January of this year.

The France international has been remanded in custody at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool until his next court appearance at Chester Crown Court on September 10.
The left-back has been playing for Manchester City since 2017 when he arrived from Monaco for £52m. Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has been jailed after appearing in court charged with four counts of rape and sexual assault.
The French international defender is accused of crimes against three women, including one under the age of 18, a court heard on Friday.
One of the alleged rapes took place at Mendy's home in Cheshire this week while he was on police bail for other sex offences, Chester Magistrates' Court was told.

The other three rape cases date back to October 2020, and the sexual assault allegedly took place in January of this year.
Mendy, who was expected to be in Manchester City's squad to face Arsenal on Saturday pending charges, will spend at least the weekend in custody after a judge refused his bail application.
He is next due to appear in court on September 10 and could be held at least until his legal team appeals the bail denial. Any appeal will be dealt with next week.

Debbie Byrne, prosecuting, said Mendy was first arrested and released under investigation on November 11 last year on suspicion of rape. He was arrested again in January on suspicion of sexual assault, the court was told.
Byrne said one of Mendy's bail conditions was that he had no housing associations. He said police were called to a party attended by 21 people at Mendy's home in the Cheshire village of Mottram St Andrew this week. He was then arrested on a further charge of rape and an alleged breach of bail, the court heard.
The prosecutor said Mendy had shown reluctance to comply with bail conditions and should be remanded in custody to avoid further prosecution.
He said: "The defendant has shown complete recklessness and, the Crown will say, pride in breaching his bail conditions and continuing his social behavior as he pleases."

Mendy sat next to two court officers in the glass dock as his lawyer Christopher Stables asked the judge not to remand the footballer. Stables said Mendy had already been detained for "two days and two nights" while awaiting trial on Friday and it was the "biggest shock" to him.
He said the experience "served as a harsh lesson in what can happen if bail conditions are not respected" and if he was granted bail on Friday, the footballer knew it was "his last chance".
Stables said Mendy was willing to post £50,000 bail to the court immediately if he was granted bail and commit to "something that can be properly described as house arrest" with long arrival times and an electronic tag.
The lawyer said Mendy was prepared to live in a "very small" place owned by an unnamed friend, a "good influence", on the other side of Manchester.

But District Judge Jack McGarva said he was not satisfied Mendy would not commit further offenses if allowed to leave court on bail. Mendy showed no reaction as he was led to the court cells.
Stables told the court that Mendy's trial "will take many months, into the new year", raising the prospect that he could be jailed for several months unless a senior judge overturns the decision on Friday.
The defender was named as a substitute in Manchester City's last game against Norwich last Saturday and has made five appearances for his club since July. He came to Manchester City from Monaco in 2017 for 52 million pounds, which was a record for a defender.
